Tax tips
Smart Tax Moves for Individuals & Businesses
Keep a dedicated folder for tax documents
Whether digital or physical, maintain one place for W-2s, 1099s, receipts, and statements throughout the year. Scrambling at tax time costs you time — and potentially deductions you can't reconstruct.
Track every business expense as it happens
Use a dedicated business bank account and credit card. Record mileage, home office use, and equipment purchases in real time. A shoebox of receipts in April is not a strategy.
Maximize your retirement contributions
Contributions to a 401(k), IRA, or SEP-IRA reduce your taxable income dollar for dollar. For 2026, the IRA contribution limit is $7,000 ($8,000 if you're 50 or older). Don't leave this on the table.
Pay quarterly estimated taxes on time
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal taxes, you're required to make quarterly payments. Missing them triggers underpayment penalties — even if you pay in full at filing time.
Never ignore an IRS notice
Every IRS notice has a response deadline. Ignoring it doesn't make it go away — it escalates the issue and limits your options. Open it immediately, note the deadline, and contact a tax professional.
Review your withholding after major life events
Marriage, divorce, a new job, a new child, or a home purchase can all shift your tax liability significantly. Update your W-4 with your employer and run a withholding check to avoid a surprise bill in April.
